Tulum Discovery Tour´s Frequently Asked Questions

About Tulum Ruins Tour:

  • Are there many archaeological sites located in front of the Caribbean Sea?

Tulum is the ONLY archaeological site located in front of caribbean cristaline water.

  • Was it always called Tulum?

Original name of Tulum was Zamá, wich in ancient mayan language means “sunrise”.

  • What was the city used for in the past?

Tulum was an important walled town, it was a harbor used for the intense commercial network. Here came trade and maritime routes of mayan people.

About the Akumal Turtles:

  • They are in danger

Unfortunately, all 7 species of Sea Turtles are endangered. This is due to illegal poaching and pollution. In Mexico, turtles are protected since 1990. Fishing, hunting, or poaching turtles is now a Federal offense.

  • Most species visit Mexico

Out of the 7 species of sea turtles that remain, 6 of them nest in Mexico.

  • They travel thousands of miles

Whether it is for migrational reasons, for mating, or feeding, Sea Turtles can travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers before reaching their destination.

  • The temperature of the nest defines the gender of the Turtles

Warmer temperatures produce mostly females, while lower temperatures produce mostly males. A tempered climate usually yields a similar amount of males and females.

  • Baby turtles use the moon as guidance

Sea Turtles are photo-tactical, which means they are attracted by the light. They use the brightest light as guidance, which is usually the reflection of the moon on the water. They avoid the shade, including the vegetation at the top of the dunes, where danger may lurk.
