Unfortunately, all 7 species of Sea Turtles are endangered. This is due to illegal poaching and pollution. In Mexico, turtles are protected since 1990. Fishing, hunting, or poaching turtles is now a Federal offense.
Out of the 7 species of sea turtles that remain, 6 of them nest in Mexico.
Whether it is for migrational reasons, for mating, or feeding, Sea Turtles can travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers before reaching their destination.
Warmer temperatures produce mostly females, while lower temperatures produce mostly males. A tempered climate usually yields a similar amount of males and females.
Sea Turtles are photo-tactical, which means they are attracted by the light. They use the brightest light as guidance, which is usually the reflection of the moon on the water. They avoid the shade, including the vegetation at the top of the dunes, where danger may lurk.
During the last ice age, the Yucatan Peninsula was a huge coral reef covered by water. When the sea levels lowered, the dry air formed our limestone soil (the Yucatan Peninsula).
Limestone is very porous, allowing water particles to flow through it, forming underground rivers. As the water erosions the underwater caves, their roofs collapse giving birth to cenotes.
The Mayans believed that Cenotes were sacred doors to the Underworld, where several of their deities lived. In Mayan Mythology, the center of the Earth is a place filled with life, from where plants, trees and water come.
To the Mayan, the depths of the Earth were full of life. Trees, plants and water came from there. In the western muind, the depths are associated with evil and punishment, but to the Mayan, it was the origin of all life.
Because cenotes are filled with rainwater that was filtered by the limestone, cenote water is one of the clearest in the world, with over 150 feet of underwater visibility.
A group of divers recently discovered the connection between both underground river systems in the Riviera Maya area, so adding up to a whopping total 153.6 Km, the Sac Actún System (white cave in Mayan) became the longest in the World as far as we know. Eleven cenotes serve as entrances to this system.
Each of them is uniquely decorated by Nature.
