Tulum is the only Mayan archaeological site to be found in front of the crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea.
The original name of Tulum is Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise.
Tulúm is the Mayan word for fence, wall or trench.
Tulum was among the first places in the Mayan kingdom to receive sunlight each day.
No more than about 1,600 people ever inhabited Tulum at one time.
Tulum is the third most-visited archaeological site in all of Mexico.
Unfortunately, all 7 species of Sea Turtles are endangered. This is due to illegal poaching and pollution. In Mexico, turtles are protected since 1990. Fishing, hunting, or poaching turtles is now a Federal offense.
TOut of the 7 species of sea turtles that remain, 6 of them nest in Mexico.
TWhether it is for migrational reasons, for mating, or feeding, Sea Turtles can travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers before reaching their destination.
The temperature of the nest defines the gender of the Turtles. Warmer temperatures produce mostly females, while lower temperatures produce mostly males. A tempered climate usually yields a similar amount of males and females.
TSea Turtles are photo-tactical, which means they are attracted by the light. They use the brightest light as guidance, which is usually the reflection of the moon on the water. They avoid the shade, including the vegetation at the top of the dunes, where danger may lurk.
A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Mayan for sacrificial offerings.
The term ‘Cenote’ derives from a word used by the low-land Yucatec Mayan —ts’onot—to refer to any location with accessible groundwater.
There are 4 kind of cenotes: open, semi-open, ancient and cavern. In our tour, we’ll visit an ancient and a cavern cenote.
